The Epsilons(D & V)

How many punks bands do you know of are made up of just one drummer and one vocalist? The Epsilons(name taken from the estate near their home) were the only 'Anarcho Punk' band that did just that. As simple as it may seem, their 'rap like' style of singing backed up by catchy drum beats became a great way for them to spread their words of wisdom and it was all received very well by most who saw them. Eventually, D & V became the name everyone knows them by now, but it was only a description standing for drums and vocals(John Peel accidentally made people think it stood for diarrhea and vomit at some point). The Epsilons were Jeff Antcliffe on vocals and his friend Andrew Paul Leech that lived in the same neighborhood on drums.

Jeff admits that the inspiration that made him wake up and become a vocalist was another vocalist by the name of Tapper Zuki, who was part of the Jamaican DJ scene. Jeff listened to everything he said, studied the way he delivered his lyrics, and sang them on his own as practice. Other notable influences include Joe Strummer from the Clash, Crass, Annie Anxiety, Flux of Pink Indians, Chumbawamba and Adrian Sherwood. D & V played their first gig in early 1980 with The Eratics, Epileptics, Rubella Ballet and several others at the Grimaldi squat in Pentonville Road, London. People were confused at first, and wondered if their guitarist and bassist hadn't show up, not aware that they never had either.

In 1982, a cassette release was recorded for Rob's 96 tapes label in Stoke Newington titled 'The New Beginning'. This led to the band appearing at the infamous Zig Zag squat gig with several other bands in December of that same year. D & V had gotten lucky earlier and managed to see Crass with help from one of Crass's guitarists named Andy Palmer. They saw Crass as an inspiration, people who had very similar beliefs as their own. This followed with a connection with Crass and their Crass Records label.

D & V entered Southern Studios in October of 1983 and recorded their first single with the aid of John Loder and Penny Rimbaud of Crass. It was called 'The Nearest Door' and took people by surprise with it's simple yet inspiring songs.

It wasn't until 1984 that D & V released anything else. Further connections with Crass led to them recording a full length titled 'Inspiration Gave them Motivation to move on out of their Isolation'. The name of the title was to describe what the band had just gone through, since they had left their home and were welcomed by several other bands that they eventually ended up touring with. As usual, violence plagued the band, and on one occasion, Andy had to drum for Flux of Pink Indians, since Martin had been beaten up and sent to the hospital.

In 1986, D & V released their final record titled 'Snare' on Flux of Pink Indian's One Little Indian label before splitting during the summer of 1986. Jeff just decided to stop doing it and felt the band had gone full circle. He ultimately left the U.K. scene and went on to 'Walk the Earth' eventually settling in Australia. his lyrics were very direct as he would often scream at the audience "You're all bleeding sheep! Wake up and get a life!"

A Touch of Hysteria

Another great band that was greatly influenced by the Mob, but didn't last long, A Touch of Hysteria only released one five track demo and played just a handful of gigs before disappearing. A Touch of History was formed in February of 1982 and was The Pilgrim(Lager) on vocals, Fran on guitar, Alec on bass and Chris on drums. the name was taken from an art piece that Chris did about The Mob's first album(Witch Hunt) which he had titled 'A Touch of Hysteria'. They weren't very political, but wrote a lot about religion.

The band began gigging right away playing their first gig on the road at the refectory at Lancaster University. Associations with The Mob, interest from Rob of 96 tapes and Chris's cousin being the drummer for the Apostles, led to the band becoming more well known. this almost led to a split single between them and the Astronauts on All The Madmen, but it never happened. Several gigs were planned, but a lot of them never happened also, but they still had a few enjoyable ones.

In 1983, A Touch of Hysteria put out their one and only release which was recorded at the 8 track Linden Sound studio in Shap. The band took the tapes and sold them at gigs. One notable gig was when they played with Psycho Faction(it was Psycho Faction's last gig). By this time, members of the band began to take interests more into their own lives.

Three of the members wanted to go travelling, while Chris went on to art school and eventually met the right people there to form Lush. The band sort of stopped, and in 1996 Chris committed suicide during the best time of Lush's career.

In 2006, the band reformed with all original members, but had someone else to fill in for the late Chris. They played the reunion gig for Chris. Later on the band reformed and now continues to play to this day.

"The Lords Crusade"

Come hence and take the cross
All western men of the faith.
Go forth and fight for thy lord.
Salvation of sin
shall be fair reward.

An army of saints,
but millions lie dead.
White armor white steeds,
but the banners blood red.

An army of saints,
but millions lie dead.
White armor white steeds,
but the banners blood red.

Come hence and take the cross
All Western self-seeking men.
Carnage, Bludgeon, forcefully gain yet
pardoned are the Christians
of the Lords Crusade.

An army of saints,
but millions lie dead.
White armor white steeds,
but the banners blood red.

An army of saints,
but millions lie dead.
White armor white steeds,
but the banners blood red.

"The Rulers"

The rulers of our time
Amassed before us
Their wracked bodies shake in
fearAs youth deliverance grows near

Rouse from your lair
And crush
societies harness
Our failing rules parting scene
Nothing to lose but your
chains

The rulers of our time
Amassed before us
Their wracked bodies shake in
fear
As youth deliverance grows near

Near!

Near!

"To Cross the Rubicon"

I sound you out the over and done with.
I serve you white feathers from yet to come.
They gained admittance through a chink in your armor.
anesthetized your brain and the battle was won.

Fly by night from the nearing new bloods.
To blurt our excuses will do you no good.
you challenged the system to avoid the draft.
Your days are numbered and that's a fact.

I call your gloomy carnival to a close.
Hark the new spirit coming to take up the cause.
Burst in like a lion creep out like a lamb.
Mr. Facing both ways
its you that I accuse.

I sound you out the over and done with.
I serve you white feathers from yet to come.

They gained admittance through a chink in your armor.
anesthetized your brain and the battle was won.
And the faces we saw were the faces we followed.
Without ever seeing what was before our eyes.
You kept on telling me you knew the answers.
but you never questioned, never tried.

I call your gloomy carnival to a close.
Hark the new spirit coming to take up the cause.
Burst in like a lion creep out like a lamb.
Mr. Facing both ways
its you that I accuse.

I sound you out the over and done with.
I serve you white feathers from yet to come.

"Death Cart"

Come along, along with me.
Tap dance on nothing at the Tyburn tree.

Come along, along with me.
Tap dance on nothing at the Tyburn tree.

Come along, along with me.
Tap dance on nothing at the Tyburn tree.

Come along, along with me.
Tap dance on nothing at the Tyburn tree.

Through the streets the death carts pass
as they've have done before.
Guilty men condemned to die
like cattle to their slaughter.

What crime could be so inhumane
that a man should die this way?
Fortis on the gallows
he must hand this dark & shameful day.

No pity from the throng who flocked the streets to scorn the rogues.
A head bent low upon his chest to hide the tears of shame.
To die in peace is all he wished
without the gallows threat.
But he had killed the one he loved
and now he has to swing.

Antisect

26.4.85 at Zaal Obsed, Hasselt, Belgium, photo by Serge Harvent.
Antisect were a huge influence on the crust movement, and like Amebix, Anti-System, Decadence Within, Sacrilege and Civilised Society, mixed elements of punk with metal for the better. The band began life in 1981 in Daventry as a four-piece to play a thrash like, hardcore punk mix, but with lyrics containing anarchist tendencies. The first lineup was Pete 'Lippy' Lyons on guitar, Pete Boyce on vocals, Pete 'Polly' Paluskiewics on drums and Renusze 'Wink' Rokicki on bass.

They didn't really fit in as 'punk's because they were into Motorhead, and didn't find the second wave of punk too inspiring(Killing Joke also had an influence on them). It wasn't until they listened to Crass that the politics behind 'Anarcho Punk'  began to sink in and influence their lyrics.

During the beginning of 1982, Antisect played their first gig as a support band for The Barkers in Preston. Afterwards, three demos were recorded that gave a small glimpse as to what kind of sound they had live. They then got a big break supporting Discharge, but they became very uncomfortable playing mainstream venues, as they saw how the big business men were exploiting the bands for profit. Slowly they began to realize that the world was starting to crumble around their home and war seemed inevitable between the British and the Americans, so they became activist and began attending protests that involved direct action. Some members also became vegans and began supporting the Animal Liberation front by sabotaging hunters and doing other acts of direct action to help stop animal cruelty.

Choosing this lifestyle also meant that they had to deal with the police force. Several members were arrested and tried in court on more than one occasion. The band continued and expanded into a six-piece, adding two more vocalists named Richard Hill, and Caroline Wallis, and they also relocated to Northampton.

They then got the attention of Flux of Pink Indians after playing a gig with them during the Summer of 1982, at the Greyhound in London. Flux of Pink Indians approached the band and offered to release an L.P. for them on their Spiderleg label. The band went into the studio began working on the album, which took weeks to finish(they wrote a bunch of new material and used some tracks from the demos, but made big changes to them).

The brilliant 'In Darkness, there is no Choice' was committed to tape at Southern during September of 1983, and was released on January 14th, 1984. Originally, the album was supposed to sound a lot more heavier, but Colin from Flux of Pink Indians toned it down a bit. A short U.K. tour followed with Crucifix and a reformed Dirt.(MDC too, but it didn't happen).

One fond memory of the band was a 'bring a toy' benefit they played for single parents where all these punks in crazy clothes and hair showed up with teddy bears and stuffed rabbits in their hands. A big promoter then asked them if they could tour in America, but they declined, being fully aware of how big business ruin punk for profit.

The tour ended in 1984, and Antisect then lost bassist Wink and vocalist Rich, replacing them with Tom Lowe from the Varukers and John Bryson. Several more gigs followed all over the United Kingdom such as a couple of dates in Italy. Antisect were now shaping into what would help influence the Crust scene, since their clothe were getting more and more dirty, and their spiky hair began turning into dreadlocks. Afterwards, the remaining vocalist Pete made his announcement that he was leaving, just as they were about to start a U.K. tour, which infuriated the band.

The band carried on as a three-piece, with Pete (Lippy) and John doing the vocals, even though they couldn't remember all the lyrics. Unfortunately, the band became known for their heavy drug use, and the police would often visit the band and arrest certain members. The band also began to realize that a lot of people within the scene were becoming hypocrites, and this disillusioned the band. They also found out that one of their roadies was burrowing money from their promoter to buy himself drugs.

In early 1986, Antisect released their 'Out from the Void' single on the Endangered Musik label. They were later approached by Motorhate to release another LP, but 'Out from the Void' would become the bands last release so the L.P. was never finished. Antisect was pushed more into the 'metal side' and began to slowly detach from the 'political punk' side.

Their last line-up was when John was replaced on bass by Lawrence Windle, who was the former bassist for The X-Cretas and Anthrax(U.K. Anthrax, not the metal one), and additional vocalist Tim Andrews was added. Unfortunately, as work on the second album was nearing completion, the band declined to sign a tight 30-page contract from some big time promoter, so the L.P. was done for good.

Soon after, the band woke up one morning to find out that all their gear had been stolen out of their van. They had to burrow equipment, and they later moved into a giant punk squat in Hackney full of crazy people and drug dealers. Several gigs were played in the summer, and the band also ran into Amebix a couple of times.

After several events of police brutality aftermath, the band noticed that people were giving up on fighting back against the system, and the remaining members felt that they were starting to feel the same way. This led the band ultimately splitting up.

Some members continued to play in different bands, but have all long since disbanded. Several promoters have tried contacting the remaining members to get them back together and start touring again(they were offered a lot of money), but the money involved does not seem to interest them, and they don't want to reform just for nostalgia.

"They(The Eternal Myth and Paradox)"

Who are these people who believe they have the right
The knowledge and the wisdom to impose their barbaric way
of life
Upon you and I and others in this world
Which itself belongs to all of us or haven't they fucking
heard

Who are these people who support the cause of war
And use their false morality and label it as law
Who are all these people who change happiness to pain
And turn the suffering of one into another's so called gain

Who are these people who wreak starvation and disease
And who are these people who build their system based on
greed
Who are these people who create aggression, fear and hate
And then use them as tools to keep all others in their place

We have created all greed and all hate
For we are as one and do so must all take the blame
We are pleading for heaven whilst accepting this hell
We're asking for liberty whilst repressing ourselves
We are controlled by outsiders to whom we pledge our
support

By our silence and acceptance we too are at fault
We sit and we suffer, and worse believe it's okay
Or we scream till we die but it won't go away
We may advocate peaceful or armed revolutions
But all we create are more institutions
To bind us and blind us, and tell us we're free
To restrict and confine us within normality,
Well freedom is internal or haven't you sussed
To possess freedom of mind is the first forward thrust
And normal, what's normal? but a lie and a con
And the most over populated prison where nobody belongs
The thought police are with us, they have been for years
They've standardized values with their weapon of fear Fear
of being pointed at of not blending with the crowd
Well we'll state we're individuals but never too loud
We're frightened and scared of the extent of our plight
And we hide in the darkness when presented with light,
We've polluted and poisoned and mistreated this land
We've tamed all the animals but failed to tame "man"
We eliminate symptoms rather than the cause
We are all the disease but we are also the cure
The rich and the poor and the weak and the strong
The black and the white and the old and the young
For givers and takers and daughter's and son's
For good against evil our work has begun
We must all stand together to rid this world of war
And of want and of suffering, so open your door
To harmony to unity to equality to sharing
Start breathing start feeling start living start caring
We can reach new horizons of trust and respect,
We can live hand in hand and let peace take effect,
We can open our hearts to compassion and love
We can open the cage that imprisons the dove
We can open our minds to be alive and be free
We can take down our barriers and reveal the true we

There is not them
And us.
There's only
You and me

"The World's Biggest Runt"

An animal has a heart, and flesh that's precious
(But obviously more to "man" than animal)
An animal is a live. It has a body, a mind
And is it forever and ever to be abused by "man" kind
At peace in its field but when human comes near
It cowers and trembles with fear
It can sense that at some point in its life
"Man" will lead it to fate with the blade of "his" knife
"Eat your pet puppy? What a cruel thing to say."
But lead a lamb to its slaughter and of course that's okay
The blood soaked death house to the well gr(k)illed meat
What right do you offer for the life that you steal?
Meat at the restaurant...medium or rare?
How did it get there? Too few really care
Animal for breakfast. Animal for tea.
Animal for supper. "Well who cares?" (We)
Picture the family. Knives in their hands
All waiting for Mummy to produce the dead lamb
Expectant and hungry to chew on it's flesh
Little Sue doesn't like meat. But 'Mummy knows best'
She'll tell Sue of protein because that's all that she sees
Mummy's unaware of blood and heart disease
There's millions starving because there's meat on the table
but try and tell Mummy and she'll dismiss it as fable
Animals in cosmetics. Animals to eat
Animals fill stomachs. But a life is not meat
Animals imprisoned and engaged for our pleasure
Used and abused as mere toys for our leisure
Destroyed and tortured in "mans" laboratory
Humiliated and stripped or all dignity
Dissected and burned and poisoned to death
And what is the reason? So one may add to ones "wealth"
Animals for clothing animals for meals
But what right do you offer for the lives that you steal?
Animals to shoot at animals to hunt
Definition of human.......................

We completely denounce the barbaric belief that to
slaughter so called
lesser species for profit
should be viable and morally acceptable to take the life of
any living creature
we see as being totally unacceptable. Deeming ourselves as
the most intelligent species
we appear to have reached the conclusion that all other
species are expendable.
The archaic way of thinking has led to both the extinction
and near extinction of hundreds of species of animal during
our short time on earth.
What we are faced with is a complete reassessment of our
whole moral standards.
Not only do we use animals to achieve our own ends.
We also seem to believe that it is our natural right to do so

"A Midnight Summer's Dream"

A vision...
For perhaps we may yet enjoy the freedom or clear waters.
We may yet see, and acknowledge, the true warmth of the
sun,
Listen, and hear the sound of natures music,
And walk, barefoot, once more upon the surface of mother
earth.
Strong...wild...and free.
A sense of security.
Truth.
The bosom of life, is that of animal and flower, and of woman
and man.
Unity, harmony, and spirit.
Tears of happiness replace those of pain.
For all, and eternity,
Dream on...
Dream on, and breath...new life.
We fly...one the wings, of hope.

Where spiral thoughts enduring flow
Within all numerous images of the wistful mind.
And subtle tinted variations of colour become all so clear
Turns to vapour, and rises, become rain, all divinity falls
Then becomes spring, brook, river, the constant changes
Anew, thus freshly flows anew forever on
, Like the echo enhanced with a sound,
Like the song of a thousand voices
Raindrops shed manifest tears of joy
upon the lamenting petals of the evergreen
The tenacious entwining of branches,
Through the shade of the sallow wood
Sparkle verdant prismatic colourations in the absorbent sun
That sets to rise upon another refluent day
And to feel steadfast, the bosom of life
In the air that passes, is that of animal and flower
And that of woman and man
And every fruit and pleasure tastes
Is that of sweetness
"The pure," so pure essence of growth
Flourished upon fertile ground,
And to see the serenity of souls
In rural pastures that feed the living land,
Fester radiant smiles of harmonious spirits.
A compassionate sky opens to breath countless existence
"All emotions grasp swiftly"
Above and below the seasons pass by
All windsome delusions flicker, distant, and so far
Rustling leaves drift, where shallows streams linger,
Pathed with cobble stones...so smooth...
So smooth from the trickling flow of cleanliness.
I hear a soft breeze passing now.
The sounds mingles with that of perpetual beauty
But silently fades within the depths
Of a midsummer night's dream.

"Channel Zero"

We call it television. it could be used as the greatest form of mass communication of knowledge that exists in the present day. however, what we see on our screens is merely a very acute reflection of the path that mankind has taken in "his" short ad somewhat erratic existence. Is it not ironic that the knowledge and technology that brought forth this marvelous invention could not be put to further use in the field of eliminating some of the struggles that stand before the progression of humanity for example learning to live in true cohesion with our environment, and ridding ourselves of the burdens of poverty, inequality and freed. Like many other "advancements" in the practice of human science, television has been put to use in a wholly regressive way. Far from enhancing the qualities of life. Its possible benefits have been largely overlooked. What we are left with is the mirror image of our own shallow and pretentious little "worlds". We laugh, we cry, we feel hatred, we feel love, as we absorb ourselves within the characters portrayed on the screen whereas if we were to take a step sideways, we might recognize the characters as being several shades of ourselves television to most, is regarded as a primary source of entertainment, rather than one of many possible forms of education or enlightenment. We allow ourselves to switch our own minds off, and we plug into that of another. On the whole, television does nothing that put into perspective our own shortcomings.

Turn away from the cathode ray and face reality...
A world of greed, pretence, and fear and misery
The focal point of view in the means for our escape,
And until we realize this problem, the show remains the
same.

"Yet They Still Ignore"

"It's a shame about the third world.
They're starving at our feet."
"Are you sure you're quite alright now George?"
"Have you had enough to eat?"
"There's lots and lots of stew left.
It's over there on the shelf."
"Are you sure you've had enough now?"
"Well you can always help yourself."
(Yet they still ignore...)
Woolworth's have got a sale one
"How about a treat?"
Says hubby to 'the wife
As they're walking down the street
They've got so much to choose from
That they don't know what to get.
Maybe an electric toothbrush
Or another cutlery set...
(And still the minutes tick away
Another hour off another day
Silence as the world is blind
To the agonies of humankind
People starve all over the world
The voice of inequality but few have heard
Some they laugh whilst others cry
Some gain 'wealth' others die.) ...
They'll buy a brand new toilet seat
That'll match the nice new loo
"Have you got a red one?"
"Oh well we'll paint the bathroom blue.
How about one of these?
I'm not quite sure what it's for.
But we've got a couple one the mantelpiece,
And I'd really like one more."
(Yet they still ignore...)
"How about a nice big joint?
Aunt Lucy's coming to dinner."
"Oh look George it's a 'chuckie roast'
It's got to be a winner
They'll lavish it with mint sauce,
Finish off with apple pie,
Then they'll sit in front of the big square screen
And let their conscience die
(And yet they'll still ignore...)

"Tortured and Abused"

I am an animal strapped to a chair
Nobody helps me because nobody cares
Humanity injects me and injects me again
Why am I subjected to this unbearable pain
Why..........Why must I die

I am an animal fed with disease
Forever I yearn for the joy of release
Throughout our existence we've been abused and confused
I wish they would destroy me I've got nothing to lose
Why..........Why must I die

I am an animal with wires in my head
Sometimes I think that I would be better off dead
Humanity is allowed to kill me or damage my brain
Why am I subjected to this unbearable pain
Why..........Why must I die

I am an animal is life so unfair
They've stolen my innocence and replaced it with fear
They've poisoned my bloodstream and tortured my mind
Why am I punished when I have committed no crime
Why..........Why must I die

"Education of Indoctrination"

Poor little Jimmy, it's first day at school
He doesn't know the answer so he's told he's the fool
"Stand by the corner you stupid little boy,
Our question must be answered or we'll take away your
toys."
Teacher's got his views on the way you've got to be
(You may have your own opinion as long as you don't
disagree with me)
Teacher knows what's best, remember teacher's always right
The teacher is this system and this system rules your life
Defiant little fucker he won't wear the uniform
So headmaster gets the cane out to ensure that he
conforms
Everybody else must wear the shirt and tie they say
If you insist on being different, we'll have you taken away
Poor little Jimmy they've forced him to obey
He doesn't like school so he's absent for a day
One day grows to two days and then it's for a week
Teacher contacts Mummy. She says, "I've given him all I
can"
All Jimmy wants is freedom but she doesn't understand
All her life she was told that if she didn't tow the line
She would end up just like Daddy and Daddy is doing time
Meanwhile little Jimmy's confused he's in despair
Mummy says she loves him as he's taken into care
She can't hold back the tears as she waves her son goodbye
Poor Jimmy's disillusioned, and he too breaks down and cries
Poor little child. They've forced him to obey
He wouldn't wear the uniform so they've had him locked
away
Teacher knows what's best for you, teachers always right
Teacher is this system and this system rules your life

"In Darkness"

Gazing out through the bars of sanction and right.
Enclosed in your prisons of anonymous life.
Offering but glimpses of who you can be.
Alive with no vision yet pretending to see.

Come out of your cupboards you boys and you girls.
Come out and play, it's time to unfurl.
Take off your masks and lay down your shields,
Without your deceit you could make living real.

Abandoning reasons you substitute death
In others in darkness and thus your fate.
Accepting the path that failure has spawned,
Pathetic, frightened, you're sold to the norm.

Living the illusion of pretending you care.
Revolving in spirals locked in despair.
You refuse to acknowledge the strength of your will.
You'll suck us down with you as you slide down the hill.

"Heresy"

What is your purpose?
Who is your god ?
Who owns your mind ?
What path do you follow?
For whom do you speak?
Which mask do you wear?
Who draws your line?
What is your weakness?
Where lies your love?
What are your dreams?
Where are your standards?
What keeps you going?
How large is your prison?
What breeds your hate?
Where do you hide?
Where are your strengths?
What are your nightmares?
When do you cry?
 How high are your walls?
What is your weapon?
How far can you see?
What is your truth?
Where are your values?
What brings you joy?
For whom do you bleed?
Which way do you turn?
Who carries your burden?
How large is your prison?
How deep is your search?
How is your slave?
How bright is your flame?
Where is your future?
What do you offer?
What are you barriers?
Who owns your mind?
What is your shield?
What do you steal?
What is your justice?
Who is your martyr?
Where is your corner?
What is your liberty?
What is your peace?
What is your purpose?
Where lies your faith?
Why was your past?
Who do you oppress?
Why do you care?
What is your bondage?
What do you use?
Who high are your walls?
Where is your reason?
Where is your enemy?
Who much can you take?
What is your wisdom?
What breeds your hate?
For whom did you suffer?
What is your scapegoat?
What do you argue?
Why is your fear?
What is your cause?
What is your answer?
How long have you got?
What is the time?
It's the time for change!

"The Buck stops Here"

Is life better than death
If so, then surely peace must be better than war
If suffering is something that nobody wants
Why should it escalate more
Are we really so afraid we have to close our eyes
And ignore that these things exist
Some of us believe that it's more important
To feed the banker before the poor
And some are not quite sure just what they want
But they're positive that they want more
Conflict in the name of peace
As we declare war again and again
Seems to be that the politics of power
Are brutal murder equals material gain
Why are we content to ride the wave
Whilst forgetting about the storm
And why must the hand that delivers the child
Seek to strangle the unborn
Rich, stinking, parasite
Wealth in wallet but none in mine
Divorced from want and oblivious to
The unfortunates of humankind...
And meanwhile, half a world away
A baby cries, dying of hunger,
It's tiny body ravaged by disease,
An old man falls to his knees
Embracing a blood stained corpse that once carried life
The battering corpse of his wife
A grief stricken mother turns silently from a window
As she waits for her son who'll never return
Another victim of another cause
Obscenity...war
In the playground wide eyed children play war games
Whilst on the other side of the street real war continues
guns and bombs as toys
Or the real mccoy
Men pointing rifles out of armored cars
Creates tension, causes bloodshed
And we fool ourselves, as some of us believe that this is
peace
A grain of rice a day
Keeps malnutrition at bay...(bollocks)
Most so called aid to the third world
Comes in the form of weapons
We'll I'm sorry mate but something's gone wrong
If we seriously believe that guns and bombs preserve life
Seems to us that the opposite is true
Weapons create wealth only for the arms dealers
Is it really okay to make profit out of death
Civilization? We're but a fucking joke
We're never find peace unless we find ourselves
But it's late and it's getting very dark outside

When we are confronted with obstacles in our path towards
a more compassionate and wholesome way of life. Too often
we pass the blame on to someone or something else. We do
this in order to remove the burden from ourselves. And thus
we distort the problem rather than solve it. The ends we
reach for cannot be achieved unless we find in ourselves
what we desire to see throughout the world. An awareness
of what we are doing, and where it is leading us, is the first
major stage and found our own way through it, can we
further our own personal progress. it is then, that we may
reflect on what we see, and, if necessary, make efforts to
change ourselves.

When we have learnt to recognize the strength that lays
within each and every one of us, the foundations for a truly
harmonious world will have been laid. When we have learnt
to use this strength to it's full advantage, when we have
learnt to share it with those who have not yet found it
within themselves, we may then, and only then, begin to
really set forth on the path towards a peaceful coexistence
for all to share.

Together we can change the world, but time is running out
and the buck stops with you.

"Out from the Void Part 1"(also known as "Your standards, Your Law")

Clawing your way up the walls
Holding the key but never finding the door
Locked on the inside you remain
Struggling to break from the ties
Almost there but you still compromise
Joining hands but your own at midnight

Sucked in by the flow of the tide
Whatever the circles it's the easier ride
But in doing so you sacrifice yourself
Fear of being out on your own
Fear of setting foot in the great unknown
Binds you to captivity you create you chains

Freedom is not out of reach
But one must learn before one may teach
That liberation is dependent upon your honesty
Whatever you desire to do
Whatever you want whatever is you
Live by your standards your law

Your standards your law
Your standards your law
Your standards your law
Your standards your law
Your standards your law
Your standards your law
Your standards your law
Your standards your law

Listen and try to understand
The peelings within these lines
Our strengths our hopes our anger
 Our will to stay alive

Desperate to communicate
The Beauty of our dreams
Wanting but never knowing
If our message is received

"Out From the Void Part II"(also known as "Accept the Darkness")

Caught in the web of the shit you create
Seen it before yet you still take the bait
Hope
Future
Poisoned by fear

Secure in the vacuum that sits in your mind
Too fucking frightened to see what's outside
Hope
Future
Poisoned by fear

Down in the depths of the void you remain
Breaking the rules but still playing the game
Hope
Future
Poisoned by fear

Anguish
Screaming
Tears shed make whirlpools in rivers of blood
Alone in the crossfire
Fear tearing at you heart
Close your eyes
Nothing is seen
Except darkness

Desperately you cling
To your illusions of security pound in layers of "wealth"
Turning away form the carnage
But you'll never escape
'Cos it's real
Close your eyes
Nothing is seen
Accept the darkness

Look Mummy Clowns

Even though the Eratics were finished, the remaining members wanted to continue. in early 1982, They recruited Dan McIntyre from The Apostles on drums and renamed themselves as Look Mummy Clowns. Now that Bondage had been replaced with a better the drummer, their sound completely changed and they ended up sounding really different from all the other bands.

Roper.
They played their first gig with Lack of Knowledge. They would continue on to record a live demo and gig with several bands including Hagar the Womb, Urban Decay, Blood and Roses and Flowers in the Dustbin.

Connections with a guy named "jumpy" that was an old Eratics fan who also liked the Clowns, gave them a chance to come out around Italy and play. While they were there, they recorded the 'Bardbuster" 7" on Toto Records, an offshoot of Jumpy's Attack label.

Guitarist Snout
Unfortunately, trouble came at their last gig at New Merlin's Cave, Islington, June 11th, 1985. Roper and Stringy had fallout over a worthless argument which led to Roper storming out of the place. The band was going to play without him, but decided not too, and split due to The Eratics history happening all over again but with Roper this time.

Stringy, Snout and Roper eventually got back together, but as a different band called Peckinpah. They have remained musically active to this day.

No lyrics. Of anyone knows any post them in the comments!

The Eratics

(Picture coming soon)

Even though they couldn't really play and never released anything besides one track on Bullshit detector one, The Eratics (before that they were known as The Pox, The Dogclips, The Clones and some other names)were still a part of the 'Anarcho' punk scene with their intelligent ideas and connections with Crass. Formed somewhere around 1979, The Eratics were bassist Terence 'Stringy' Castle, guitarist Martin 'Snout' Seward and drummer Kevin 'Bondage' Lester on drums while they were all in school in Waltharn Cross. After seeing the first wave of punk play around the United Kingdom including Crass, it inspired them to get up and just start a band, no matter how bad some of them were at playing instruments. They played their first gig with the Epileptics, Urban Decay and Rubella Ballet on June 15th, 1979. Stringy played bass and sang, until they were joined by Mark 'Roper' Double on vocals.

Roper played his first gig with the Eratics with The Sinyx at the Focus in Southend, a band the guys would become close friends with. At this point, Stringy was living on the streets, and moved into a squat full of hippies. The band used that squat as the 'old church' and arranged some gigs there thanks to other punks that moved in. Their second song was called 'Factory Floor' because some of the members left school at 15 and got dead end factory jobs to afford going to gigs and buying records. Their first song was called 'Tablets', written by Stringy, and was about the drugs he had to take at a hospital after a car accident busted his leg. Urban Decay played that song and eventually released it as their own, but without crediting the Eratics.

By 1981, the band had still not made an official recording, but did record a track onto a regular tape recorded named 'National Service' in Sount's front room for Crass's first Bullshit Detector. It was all about gigs for the band, they were too busy with that to ever record anything for a release. Unfortunately, the end came that same year after a violent gig in Walthamstow. Fortunately for Bondage, he didn't turn up, so the drummer of D & V filled in on drums. While they played, a bunch of people smashed in and started wrecking the place and beating people up, so the band had to make a run for it.

Their last gig with Bondage was at the Stevenage Bowes Lyon House. However, no one really turned up, plus they felt they were playing like crap(and it was snowing). The Eratics were trying new experimental numbers, but Bondage couldn't manage to catch on because of his lack of experience on the drums. This might explain why he didn't show up at their last gig. After that last show were he didn't show up was over(from the violence), Bondage was never heard of again and the band called it a day.

"No More war(You gotta be Proud)"

Me house is blown up, me brothers dead
Me father got wounded, it sent him strange in the head
Me mother got so scared, she dont speak any more
and nearly all me friends got killed in the war
Should me grandad be me hero for killing a jap
He killed twenty Germans, arrgh give him a clap
Could someone please tell me what I'm S'posed to owe
'cos to tell you the truth I don't fucking know

(chorus)

But we still won, yeah glory is ours
Replace my family with a bunch if flowers
but oh yeah we was the winning side
and all what we lost, has been made up for in pride

Yeah we won the war, I should be proud
I got my pride for an A. bomb cloud
Yeah we was the bravest, we was the best
Look we won the war, so fuck the rest
Well I wont fight,no not for you
Do you know What's gonna happen, we'll I'll give you a clue
We'll be running for out shelters, but It'll do us know good
Yeah they'd have you there now if they thought they could.

No, we all lost, nobody won.
Too many people got killed by the gun
and surely you dont want that to happen again
When you've blown up all the people, what then?
Do you think you will be happy when you get control?
They'll be no more people left for you to push around
They'll be down in the shit where they've always been
You and your wars are both obscene
Your prepared to use us to fight your war
but when we need help you always shut the door.

You'll all fucking die, and what if you dont
Do you think you'd live in that destruction I can tell you, you wont
So why dont we stop 'em? Yeah lets stop 'em now
I think I would if I could, but I dont know how
Send the government a letter, they'll just throw it away
So it looks like the threat could be here to stay
They're using a war to keep us all in hand
If I told that to me grandad, do you think he'd understand?

No, he'll wanna be loyal, be a hero to the end
keep giving them an enemy, they've been programmed to defend
They'll always be some shithead pushing for a war
You gotta fight and kill, be brave, no matter what for
Yeah, there always be some shithead pushing for a war
You could give him the whole world and he'd still want more
The royal family and government pretend that they care
but they aint really bothered 'cos they wont be there.

"Russia"

World dommination is you'r aim,
pull the trigger, don't refrain,
freedom aint important to you,
so what the fuck are you gonna do?

Russia, Russia, communist state,
Russia, Russia, You can't wait,
fascist commies, don't dictate,
don't you know you'r years too late,

Lenin Stalin were both the same,

Fight in Asia, fight in Iran,

Eratics '80

"Parasite"

What are you trying to do to me?
You are blinding me, so I can't see,
Where's the hidden antidote,
I don't care if you give me the vote,
No, I don't care it's plain to see,
no I'm not anyones enemy,
it's not me who breaks the rules,
or gets involved in political brawls,

Parasite what a sight
Parasite guess who's right

No Im just another parasite who lives off the state
I'm another worker. For me it's too late,
I read it in the papers, I saw it in the "sun,
"go to work, cunt, or I'll smack your fuckin um"
what's the point, am I lazy,
do what your told, if you don't your crazy,
but I won't fucking do it, I won't comply,
I won't make money for old school tie,
'coz they're laughing at us,
in their old boys clubs,
and I'll go on scrounging,
untill the barstards go bust.

"Kama-Kharzi (Divine Wind)"

Squadron leader, Hiroshima
gets in his zero, one-time hero,
flys away, never to return,
swooping on the enemy,
Kamakazi burn,

Kama-kharzi, die for your country,
your life expectancy...... is NIL,

Flying coffin, bird of death,
fanatical jap with nothing left,
his guns are ready, a prayer to god,
nothing can save you, fanatical sod,

Ball of flame, chokeing smoke,
mission accomplished, kamakazi spoke,
the riseing sun has lost one more,
forgotten hero of the second world war,

"Intimidate"

They intimidate the people who try to think,
'coz they could be dangerous, see through
the trick,

They intimidate them so when they fight back,
they will put them away, crush them flat,

They give us all the usual lies,
they fill us full of crap,
moral standards must be upheld, does freedom
mean just that?
Well fuck your freedom, don't intimidate me,
fuck your police, your army,
'cos it don't mean nothing, it's worth sod all,
I just can't wait for the governments fall,

for fall it must, the system as well,
The whole fuckin' lot of you go to hell,
'coz you've intimidated me once too much,
and I'm gonna destroy you, turn you to dust.

"National Service"

They'll put you away,
lock you away,
forget all about you and throw away
your key,
It's an easy solution to all our problems,
take away you'r freedom, you've got the
right to chose,

National service, national service, national service is good for me,
National service, national service, national service is going to kill me.

they'll put you in the army, brainwash you,
teach you how fight and teach you how
to kill,
don't be afraid of them. Tell 'em what to
do,

National service, national service, national service is good for me
National service, national service, national service is going to kill me

they'll put you in the army, thats what they
want to do,
to stop rebellion and cure us all,
day to day orders on how you must behave,
a long life  of servitude to see you to the
grave.

National service, national service, national service is good for me
National service, national service, national service is going to kill me
National service, national service, national service is good for me

"Capital Punishment"

You wanna flog my back if i do something wrong,
you wanna flog my back if i step out of line,
bring back capital punishment,
scar me for life,
make me cry 'cos i carry a knife,

Violence breeds violence,
what do you expect?
Violence breeds violence,
you can't command respect, no.

if you've been treated like scum all your life,
and they've thrown the book at you for not looking nice,
then what do you expect,
when you don't turn out right and they wan't to beat you
'coz they say it'S right,

Violence breeds violence,
what do you expect?
Violence breeds violence,
you can't command respect, no.

wake up world it's 1979,
its a civilized society,
but there's still squallor and grim,
you can't turn the clock back a hundred years,
you can8t command respect if you rule by fears,

Violence breeds violence,
what do you expect?
Violence breeds violence,
you can't command respect, no.

punish, punish, punish
whip the punks,
punish the individuals who come from dumps,
bring back flogging say the old school tie,
punish, punish, punish,
why,why,why...............

Violence breeds violence,
what do you expect?
Violence breeds violence,
you can't command respect, no.

Lack of Knowledge

Never with a chorus in their songs, played music that several of their 'fellow' punk friends hated for not conforming, Lack of Knowledge were a unique band that did everything the way they wanted to, without ever selling out or doing what was expected from them as a band while throwing their own gigs to help boost the scene in their area. A lot of people don't seem to realize how hard it was back then for 'anarcho' bands to play gigs and to reach out their ideas to wider audiences. There were no computers(no email), no compact discs, no DVD's and no cellphones. Being a punk back then was dangerous and there were many risks. The only thing most of these bands had was John Peel.

In 1977, Lack of Knowledge member Danny was already in another band named Headache, who had just released a single. His sixteen-year-old brother Bernard Wanted to form a band, so he bought a drum set. He got his old friends twelve-year-old brother Paul Stevens to play bass, and Paul himself brought along his friend fourteen-year-old Tony Barber on guitar. Both Tony and Paul had a guitar and bass, and Bernard had enough ideas to make songs so they were set. At this point, Bernard wrote the songs, while Paul and Tony played them as instrumentals.

Rehearsals took place in Bernard's bedroom and some of the early songs were very experimental. During 1978, every rehearsal was taped into a portable mono cassette player and several D.I.Y. albums were made. One was called 'Lack of Knowledge; that Tony said in response to Bert's 'World of Knowledge' encyclopedias. In early 1979, Bernard left to join a 'real' band called The Position. Tony became rhythm guitarist for that band, but got kicked out for not showing up to rehearsals.

Paul and Tony then tried to carry on the old band and went through several line-up changes the next six months. They went through several band names also(at one gig they were called 'Assorted Tools'). They played another gig as 'Lack of Knowledge' but had no drummer. Another gig played by them was as a five-piece with Frank Hodgson on vocals, John 'Einstein' on drums and Danny Boyce(died a couple of years later from an accidental heroine overdose) on guitar. Tony and Paul decided to then record a couple of tracks as 'Trio of Testicles' instead of 'Lack of Kowledge' and sent a copy of them to Crass for the first Bullshit Detector, but they tracks never appeared again.

Now, Headache had split, and Danny decided to join in on vocals. This new version of Lack of Knowledge practiced every Saturday and wrote lots of songs right away. Their first gig with this line-up was at a friend's party with Bernard back on drums but only for that time. Frustrated with no steady drummer, the band decided to ask some random school kid if he would join the band. The kids name was Jason 'Chief' Powell, who had never played drums before in his life, but he agreed to jump in and learn as fast as he could.

Within two months he became a decent drummer, and the official name for the band became 'Lack of Knowledge' and a completely new set was written. In March of 1981, the band recorded for the first time in a proper studio. They did not like the results, so they went to 'Octave Eletronics' to re-record it at a much more cheaper cost. They put it out as a 7" and got 500 pressed(back then, bands that refused to sell out had to make every single record and sleeves themselves if they were doing it on their own). they sent the singles everywhere, even giving one to John Peel so he could play it on his show.

They also gave one to Penny Rimbaud of Crass directly at their house. He liked it so much that he decided to release the next Crass records release by them. It took a year to get to recording though, and by that time Chief had been kicked out and replaced with drummer Philip Barker who was a fan of Lack of Knowledge and member of another local band called Klee(he also drummed for this band and played one or two gigs with Lack of Knowledge). After several practice sessions at Danny's 'dad's garage('Waller Studios'), Lack of Knowledge went down to Southern to record the single.

Shortly after playing their only gig with Crass(at the Zig Zag squat gig during December of 1982)The band recorded their 'Grey' E.P. in 1983. Lack of Knowledge didn't conform to anarchist ideas, or any kind of punk 'fashion', so they were hated by a lot of people. The band didn't care and went on to record 'the album' for Crass's Corpus Christi label. At that point Paul decided to leave, but not before helping with the album.

By 1984, their 'Sirens are Back' album(once the album was done Paul left) was released, and they had a new bassist(Karen, Tony's girlfriend) whom they were already practicing with. She had never played a bass in her life, but was forced to do so as quickly as possible.  Philips connections with a band called 'Living in Texas' who ran 'Chainsaw' records led to them releasing 'Sentinel' in 1985. In 1986, Lack of Knowledge played their last show in Colchester, which was he farthest they ever traveled for a gig. No one in the band remembers why they split, but it was right when they were ready to release another record. Recently, Lack of Knowledge have reformed and are playing gigs again and with releasing new recordings of old songs from the late seventies and eighties that were never recorded.

"We're Looking for People"

In the corner of a burnt out building you sit with the
bomb. Don't sleep now it's almost time. Outside
snow begins to fall as the car turns the corner. A
figure rushes into the street clutching the deadly
symbol of freedom, lets lose the destruction made
of desperation.

The world explodes, bodies splatter.
The car twists and bursts into flames, splitting burning
debris in every direction. Screams and smoke rise-
the assassin staggers from the wreckage, his work
done - 'must hide'.

You move in shadow, the cold blue glow of a street in
winter, through the snow to the house of the inner
circle. You reach the door. 'Who is this?' - 'The
fugitive'.

Welcome 'This is just a beginning', he says,
but the rebels are betrayed. Doors burst open, and
machine gun death rains in on the conspirators. The
remaining few confess their crime and when justice
is done, die. But the hope lives on; they die but the
hope lives on.

"Another Sunset"

The dying sun, red and swollen, goes down for the
final time in a blaze of glory. A symphony of colour.
Orange, red, green and violet dance across the
horizon, leaving a vast perfect skyline, a sad goodbye
to humanity.

Leaning over the balcony gazing at the
illuminated seascape, now devoid of it's once teeming
life, you wonder why you decided to stay.

Returning to the interior your cassette groans at it's
slow death, a dreadful parody of what once was
music fills the room and your mind, reminding you of
its former melody

Outside darkness is enveloping the
hemisphere, and cold moves forward covering land
and sea alike in ice. Huddled in the corner the last
thing you see is nothing. The last thing you hear is silence.

"Girl in a Mask"

Girl in a mask outside the tank factory, riveted steel
rolling off the production floor. He loads the missile
bay, she works in the animal labs making cosmetics
safe for consumption. Waking home past the gas-
works, they know how lucky they are.

In front of the wallscreen they sit and stare, it's telling them how
happy they are, telling them to be proud of their coun-
try. Hail king william - former royal baby - a whole
population reflect in his glory.
Girl forget her mask last Sunday, even overtime
couldn't play the hospital. In her condition she was
lucky to make twenty. He agrees to donate her parts
to the organbanks, she'd understand the he needs the
money.

Boy in a mask lost his job at the factory,
something to do with chemical weaponry, now he
can't make payments. The soup vans help but the gas-
works said 'no vacancy' - so he sits outside and
watched the tanks roll out of the factory.

"Radioactive Man"

The aftermath of too many wars, the last man in
europe stumbles through the wreckage of somebody's
life, somebody's home,

down the streets that used to
ring with voices now silent. Thick vermillion skies
hang heavy on his back. Through his veins courses
new blood. In his mind a mission.

Underground bunker, last sanctuary of the ruling
body left to maintain law and order in a crisis, a
handful of tanks patrol the area. Civil servants sit at
the nerve centre, monitoring the operation, can't
believe their eyes when the man enters through a
hole he made in a fifteen foot reinforced concrete
wall.

Reduces them to ashes with one fierce radio-
active glance, then turns and heads towards his next
destination.
